Brighton Hotel Ratings Explained

When you're looking for a place to stay, you need an inspection system you can trust. Which is why VisitBrighton only works with Brighton hotel accommodation that has been inspected under VisitBritain's or the AA's National Quality Assurance Standards, or the Brighton & Hove Accommodation Scheme

Wherever you see the Enjoy England Quality Rose, the AA sign, or the Brighton & Hove Accommodation Scheme logo, this means the accommodation has been rated.

National Quality Assurance Standards

All accommodation is rated nationally by stars. There are 9 main accommodation types and a rating of 1 to 5 stars. So, for example, a hotel awarded 3 stars would have a rating of 3* Hotel.

Here’s a summary of the rating system:

Accommodation types (Sectors)

Hotels (1-5 stars)
Budget Hotels (no star ratings)
Guest Accommodation, Campus, Hostels, Self Catering, Boats, Holiday Parks (1-5 stars)

Star ratings made easy:

1 star  – simple, practical, no frills
2 stars – well presented or well run
3 stars – good level of quality and comfort
4 stars – excellent standard throughout
5 stars – exceptional with a degree of luxury

Gold & Silver Awards

These are awarded to properties that exceed expectations within the rating level.

Silver - recognises high quality in all areas of the business, with very good levels of customer care.

Gold - denotes exceptional levels of quality, comfort, cleanliness, hospitality and attentive service.

Brighton & Hove Accommodation Scheme

The Brighton & Hove Accommodation Scheme is an inspection scheme accredited by VisitEngland. Assessments are carried out by trained Quality in Tourism inspectors.

The scheme is a 'light' version of the full assessment scheme above and checks that a business meets all current legislation requirements, is safe, clean and well-maintained, and where the business has a website, that it presents a true reflection of the accommodation on offer.

Please note; the Brighton & Hove Accommodation Scheme does not give ‘star’ gradings.
