Historic Houses

A photo of Brighton Royal Pavilion at dusk.

Since the flamboyant Prince Regent first stepped out in Brighton in 1783, his extraordinary seaside palace, the Royal Pavilion, has become synonymous with the city of Brighton and Hove. Transformed by John Nash, between 1815 and 1822, into one of the most dazzling and exotic buildings in the British Isles, the Palace really is a must see on any visit to the city.

But did you know there are also a great array of other historic houses to see in Brighton and Hove and the surrounding areas?

The impressive Preston Manor conjurs up the heady atmosphere of an Edwardian country house, just moment from the city, whilst the Grade II listed Palmeira Mansions  offers a glimpse back into Victorian life.

Slightly further afield you'll discover the wonders of Charleston, once home to the Bloomsbury Set, and the stunning Parham House and Gardens, superbly situated in the heart of a medieval deer park below the South Downs.

Check out our Heritage in Brighton section for more on the architecture and history of Brighton and Hove.
