From sleepy fishing village to bustling metropolis, the history of Brighton is a classic coming-of-age tale. Check out our Brighton history tree to find out how Brighton and Hove history has been shaped through the ages and how, from the late 1700s, Brighton became a fashionable seaside destination.

Prince George and Brighton Regency History
When Prince George - later to become Prince Regent and then George IV - decided to make his home here in 1783 Brighton's popularity soared. It was a real turning point in Brighton history.

The town underwent an amazing transformation and many of the city's famous Regency squares and crescents were built and the Royal Pavilion was transformed into an extravagant palace, concreting the building as one of the key elements in the colourful architectural history of Brighton.
