Very few cities can match the month of May in Brighton, when visitors and residents alike are dazzled by four cutting edge Festivals.

Vibrant Brighton welcomes visitors to the city to experience an exciting programme of theatre, dance, music, art, street performance and outdoor spectacle as well as much more for three weeks in May.


The Brighton Festival
celebrates its 43rd year in 2009 and, as always, unveils a sensational programme of exciting events.  The Festival, with a reputation for innovative and creative performance, is the biggest and boldest multi-arts festival in England.  Brighton Festival is also delighted to welcome Turner Prize winning artist Anish Kapoor to the newly created role of Guest Artistic Director for 2009 with a number of his works presented across the city throughout the Festival. The Brighton Festival Fringe is the world’s largest open-access Fringe festival comprising over 600 events from cabaret to club nights and includes three weekends of outdoor fun at ‘Fringe City’ and ‘Fringe Street’ and the return of the spectacular Speigeltent.  With its cutting edge reputation, the Fringe encourages the promotion of arts and entertainment, providing an accessible platform for new work and up and coming talent.  (2-25 May 2009)

The Great Escape, with over 300 new local and international artists showcasing in over 30 venues in 3 days, has become Europe’s leading Festival for new music. Past acts to play The Great Escape include The Ting Tings, Vampire Weekend, Santagold and The Pigeon Detective (14-16 May 2009)

The Artists Open Houses is the biggest free arts event in Britain with over 200 homes and venues transformed into galleries.  For 2009, Artists Open Houses will be launching “House” – a series of curated projects focused on the theme of ‘Art and Domestic Space’. (first four weekends in May 2009)
