Indigo - A Blue to Dye For

Image – Copyright Royal Pavilion, Libraries & Museums, Brighton & HoveDon't miss this unique survey of the world's oldest and most distinctive dyestuff at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, including one of the earliest pairs of denim jeans.

From Egyptian to McQueen
This major exhibition of art, craft, fashion and design features historical and contemporary indigo-dyed artefacts from around the world.

Items displayed across both the Brighton and Hove museum sites range from ancient Egyptian garments to contemporary textiles from Asia and Africa, from European and American crafts, to fashion wear by Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen.

The historical journey of indigo is traced from Roman Egypt and 16th century domestic textiles through  the rediscovery of indigo by William Morris for his chintzes, to the manufacture of synthetic indigo in the late 19th century.

Contemporary craft from around the world
In addition to historical textiles, Indigo - A Blue To Dye For features the work of many contemporary craft makers from Britain and around the world.

The show also features highlights from the story of blue denim, including original garments, demonstrating how denim is continually re-invented and re-interpreted by both high - and high-street - fashion.

The exhibition runs from 29th September 2007 and admission is free.
