If you're looking for something different to do with the kids this summer, check out the eco-friendly Earthship Brighton in Stanmer Park.
The first of its kind in England, Earthship Brighton is a solar powered, eco friendly building built from used tyres. The idea behind earthships is complete sustainability. Working with the planets natural systems such as the sun's energy and rain to provide heat, power and water, earthships do not make use of greenhouse gas emitting power stations, nor do they rely on mains water or waste services. This makes them autonomous and cheap to run.
The pioneering Earthships have evolved over the last thirty years from the revolutionary work of Earthship communities in Taos, New Mexixo. The first of its kind in the England, Earthship Brighton is located in Stanmer Park and unique tours of the Earthship are held on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month. The 1-mile tour begins at 10:30 a.m. and also includes an overview of the Stanmer Organic consortium. Click here to find out more.
Recently named one of Britain's Top 10 walks by the Independent newspaper, Stanmer Park also offers a great opportunity to introduce the kids to the open countryside. If you're lucky, you might even stumble into Pudding Bag Wood! Buses 25 and 78 leave regularly from the city centre to Stanmer Park.
