Undercliff walk re-opens

Brighton''s undercliff area.Relax in Brighton with a leisurely summer stroll along the impressive Undercliff Walk between Black Rock and Saltdean.

A section of the Undercliff Walk, closed since cliff falls in 2001, has re-opened to the public. Great news for walkers, it means that the whole 5 kilometre (3 mile) walk from Black Rock to Saltdean is now accessible for the first time in 5 years. The sensitive nature of the work carried out on the cliff was so well done it also won an award from the Institute of Civil Engineers.

The coastline to the east of Black Rock (where the Marina now lies) is in marked contrast to the famous beaches to the west, dominated by chalk cliffs rising to 25m above a wave cut platform. A popular and scenic coastal walk, the area is also a site of special historical and geological interest, with fossils of mammoths, whooly rhinos and even hippos having been discovered there over the years.

So, even if you don't spot a mammoth, the Undercliff Walk makes an impressive walk at any time of the year. Regular bus services and the Volks Railway both go to Black Rock. Click here to find out more about the history of Brighton's undercliff area.
