About

Hove Plinth was unveiled in April 2018 as a new cultural landmark on the Hove seafront. The inaugural sculpture, Constellation, is a celebration of Hove's past and present and was created by Jonathan Wright. It is based on an ‘orrery,’ a mechanical model of the solar system in which the ‘planets’ have been replaced with historic and present day features of Hove.

The gilded icons on Hove’s very own ‘constellation’ include copies of museum objects such as the bronze age Amber cup and the pioneering special effects cine camera as well as a bust of Queen Victoria and a model of a cricketer. There are models of the West Blatchington windmill (crafted from a model made by a resident who looks after the mill) and its modern equivalent the Rampion wind turbine. Other icons include an elm tree, beach hut, seagull and even a local skateboarder .

Visitors can use their mobile phones on site to connect with the sculpture and listen to the Constellation icons jostling for attention. The present sculpture is the first in a series of installation that will adorn Hove Plinth and will stay for approximately 18 months.

The attraction is the initiative of Hove Civic Society , a local charity which raised the funds from local residents, businesses and major grant-giving organisations.
