Chanctonbury Rings: A Live Ghost Box Performance
The Old Steine
The Old Steine
AboutChanctonbury Rings is a spoken-word and music performance by Justin Hopper and Sharron Kraus, based on their Ghost Box Records album. ('An album of sensual spellcraft.' - Caught By The River.)
In the performance, writer Hopper, musician Kraus and video artist Wendy Pye tell a story of ghostly encounters on the Downs through Hopper's texts and Kraus's psychedelic compositions, inspired by traditional British folk music. Kraus performs all of the music live, layering bowed dulcimer, recorders, synths, percussion and her own vocals into a warm-yet-uncanny sound.
Justin Hopper is an American writer living and working in the UK. Chanctonbury Rings was developed from a chapter in his book about landscape and memory along the South Downs Way, The Old Weird Albion.
Sharron Kraus is a singer of folk songs, a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose work offers a dark and subversive take on traditional music. In addition to eight solo albums she has collaborated with many leading lights of modern folk, including Meg Baird, Jon Boden, United Bible Studies and her projects Rusalnaia and Tau Emerald.
Wendy Pye is a Brighton-based visual artist who uses photography and video. Her projects are inspired by landscape narratives and concepts associated with a 'sense of place'. Wendy has created work in response to Beachy Head in East Sussex and more recently the Norwegian Arctic Circle.
