Wildflower Meadow Tour with Senior Gardener Elliot Chandler

About

Discover the diverse flora of wildflower meadows at their height during this guided tour, led by Senior Gardener Elliot Chandler.

High Beeches is a true example of how ornamental gardens can be managed organically and support wildlife. The gently sloping woodland areas contain naturalistic ghyll-fed ponds, hosting 20 species of dragonfly and damselfly, including Brilliant Emerald, Downy Emerald and Golden-ringed Dragonfly.

In June however, it is the extensive, traditionally-managed wildflower meadows that take centre stage; a rare habitat in the high weald, supporting populations of grassland butterflies and grasshoppers.

During this guided tour, Elliot will take you for a gentle wander through the meadows, helping you to identify the rich variety of flora and fauna, and share how they are managed and improved for wildlife.

After the tour, there will be time to explore the rest of the garden at your own pace. This is an opportunity to spend an afternoon in a beautiful location and hopefully come away with lots of inspiration for how you can make small changes to your own garden spaces to support biodiversity.

Sussex Wildlife Trust worked with High Beeches, building scrapes and leaky dams, as part of the Wilder Ouse Project. Keep an eye out for these as you make your way round the garden.

Elliot is passionate about nature and, working as a gardener, loves being able to manage places that are beautiful to humans but at the same time allow nature to thrive. His motto is that gardens are very valuable for wildlife and wildlife is very valuable for gardens.
