Yesterday we headed to the Komedia for a festive treat to see the Long Nose Puppets with their family friendly show Out of the Hat and what a treat it was!

Aimed at 2-8 year olds the show was a mesmerising journey following “Doris the determined” and “Delilah the daring”, as they prepared to put on the world’s greatest magic show. Doris and Delilah meet some brilliant friends along the way to help them with their endeavour (our favourites were definitely the frog playing the trumpet and the spectacular dandy moth.) The show is really well suited for the younger 2 – 8 year old audience it recommends, with a big central area for the kids to sit on the floor and watch with comfy cushions to ensure they are as comfortable as possible during the performance. We attended with our 3 year old and unlike other, longer and more rigidly seated shows, we found the unallocated seating and the central mat layout really worked for the younger audience (although they can sit on a normal seat should they wish.)

As soon as the show started we were all mesmerised by Doris and Delilah and because the set is so intimately laid out and you are so close to the action, it is impossible not to become immersed in the story from the start. Our little theatre critic was spellbound throughout, as the bright friendly puppets performing were accompanied by a brilliant catchy soundtrack (Thanks to Tom Gray of Gomez)which had all the children and adults bopping along, 45 minutes went by in no time, not often you can say that with a toddler in tow!

Following the show, you also have the opportunity to meet the puppets and performers up close, which we found really added to the sense of wonder surrounding the performance, even though our little one was reluctant at first she couldn’t resist in the end as Doris and Delilah had won her over. This show was definitely a tonic away from all the Christmas Chaos and we all left with a warm glow, Out of the Hat was the perfect opportunity to escape and spend some quality family time together and in the words of my daughter it was “Very really fantastic!”

Long Nose Puppets, Out of the Hat is showing at the Komedia (44 – 47 Gardner Street, Brighton BN1 1UN) Tickets: Adults £10, Child/Concession, £8 Family Ticket £32. Shows run from 20th – 31st December at 11am and 2pm – please check website for availability.
