Did you know Brighton & Hove played a pivotal role in the development of film? Today the city is home to one of the oldest cinemas in the world as well as multiplexes and independent cinemas.

The Duke of York’s Picturehouse opened in 1910 making it one of the oldest cinemas in the world and the can-can dancer’s legs on the roof are iconic. The picturehouse is so popular that they opened a sister venue called Duke’s at Komedia in the North Laine. In nearby Lewes you will find Depot, an award-winning independent 3-screen cinema which showcases mainstream, arthouse, world cinema, documentaries, and classic films. They also host film festivals, art events and special one-off screenings.

For a more traditional multiplex experience head over to Brighton Marina to see the latest Hollywood Blockbuster at the 8-screen cinema. In the summer the Marina often has an outdoor big screen showing major sporting events and must-watch movies. Brighton also has its very own annual film festival, CINE-CITY, which celebrates the moving image every November with an eclectic mix of premieres, previews, classics and home-grown digital adventures. With different themes every year, it's a must for film lovers.
