In Covid-19

We often start our posts by sayng how lucky we are to have the jobs we have. We all love Brighton and so getting to tell the world to come and visit us is a dream job. But what happens when people are told that only essential travel is allowed, stay at home and practice social distancing and/or self-isolation?

Well as you can imagine this did cause some interesting discussions at the start of the week. Some destinations looked like they were trying to carry on as normal whilst others decided to suspend activity. Personally I like VisitBritain & VisitEngland's approach as they are sharing images from movie locations, giving people things to look out for as they are watching more films at home. I think they will also be sharing British recipes and book locations too. Great ideas but we didn't feel this was the right fit for our channels.

For us it's the people of Brighton that make this such a special place to visit, study, work and live in. We are lucky to have so many independent businesses working with us; run by creative, innovative and passionate people. Therefore we've decided to share their stories and have asked our businesses to let us know what they are doing during this difficult time. On Wednesday we updated our feeds to let people know that there will be a step-change in the content.

It's only been a couple of days but the results have been positive so far - as expected our amazing businesses are doing some fantastic things but what I didn't expect to see was the reactions from our followers.

Here are a few of my favourte comments:

  • "Love from Germany, already looking forward to coming back to Brighton in summer!"
  • "A big love to my beautiful place in my heart from saudi arabia . Wating to be there back in summer"
  • "We have booked for June, not looking likely at the present time ! Boo hoo ! We love Brighton and will miss you !"
  • "Love from Spain!!!"
  • "Beautiful city"
  • "we were to come in april we had to postpone in august. this is only a postponement ! good luck see you soon Brighton ... from France"
  • "Really feel for all the small businesses that make our lovely town so special and unique"
  • "Still one of the best city in my life! Hopefully we all can overcome this storm."
  • "See you Brighton ❤️❤️greetings from Germany. My first time in Brighton was in January. Love it"

Thank you! Your comments mean so much to us and our businesses :)

As for the busninesses themselves their response has also been amazing, here are a few highlights:

Several of our food & drink partners are now offering Click & Collect and/or home delivery services (check venue's own website / social media to confirm) but here are a few that we are already aware of: English's, The Set, Flour Pot Bakery, Cin Cin, Loud Shirt, Cielo Cakery, Unbarred Brewery - as I said this is just a handful and I'm sure many more already are or will be soon so please do check and help support these wonderful establishments.

Don't forget many of our independent shops, restaurants & bars offer gift vouchers so if you want to support them in this difficult time then please do order some vouchers to let them know you'll be back as soon as you can.

Equally if you have booked tickets for an event you will of course be entitled to a refund but if you can afford it perhaps you could consider accepting a gift voucher instead or using the refund to make a donation to the venue?

These are strange and scary times for everyone but it has been heart-warming to see social media being trasformed into such a postive place, I think this crisis has taken social media back to its roots as a force for good and a means of connecting people.

Keep safe everyone - please keep following us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and most importantly keep supporting our amazing local businesses - we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

  • TLDR (really what's your excuse?!): We love Brighton & it is full of wonderful people!
