In Covid-19

Today we welcome a guest post from Cat of Brighton Food Tours as she lets us know what they've been up to since lockdown began...

So what is a food tour company to do during lockdown? The answer is simple - just do what we did before! Share the amazing Brighton food scene, support our local independent traders and most of all eat and drink our way out of this lockdown……

We started Brighton Food Tours 4 years ago - on a mission to celebrate and support the best of Brighton’s food scene. We love our city - the commitment to community, the creativity, the diverse range of independent businesses and of course the cornucopia of beautiful food & drink available. That food and drink is still here and while we can’t sit in a restaurant or browse the shops we can still enjoy what our city has to offer. Our social media has been a frenzy of sending out info about businesses that are still open, now deliver and have diversified to meet the needs of their customers. We have also been ordering and enjoying the wares of our vendors.

First…let us eat cake! (and bread and other baked goods….)

We decided we had to celebrate our 4th birthday at the start of April so we ordered birthday cake from the amazing Sugardough bakery. Kane baked and decorated a beautiful cake for us and we gobbled down their almond croissants, focaccia too. We were overjoyed to discover that FlourPot Bakery are delivering a great sample of their usual range including the legendary Friday doughnut selection. Julien Plumart The Open Bakery & Real Patisserie are all also open and delivering. People who are thinking about sending birthday surprises may like to consider an afternoon tea delivery from the wonderful Metrodeco Tea Salon.

Next a little tipple….

The Brighton & Hove independent wine & beer people have not left us high and dry in this challenging time. Brighton’s oldest wine merchants - Butlers - have undertaken some epic work to start up deliveries. North Laines’ favourite, Ten Green Bottles, do online ordering, Quaff Seven Cellars continue their great work supplying us all with tipples too. On the beer front the fantastic Unbarred Brewery deliver their range of locally brewed beers and Bison Beer are delivering an epic range of beery delights. Several pubs such as The Independent and The Evening Star are also doing beer pick ups.

Fresh Stuff...

First of all thank goodness for the likes of HISBEInfinity Foods The Fruit & Veg Shop at Brighton’s Open Market, the epic Fiveways FruitsRicci’s and Seed N' Sprout in Kemptown and SA Deveson in Rottingdean. All open and some delivering fresh fruit and veg, deli products and health food to the people of Brighton & Hove.

Secondly what joy we have at a) living by the sea and b) having amazing fresh fish from Brighton & Newhaven Fish Sales down at Shoreham Harbour. We went down and bought fresh squid, mussels and prawns last week and enjoyed a sumptuous feast of moules, garlic buttered prawns and the freshest calamari ever and all for £16! They deliver too as do local company Nutritious Fish.

Other foodie joy…

The delivery that made me cry a little with joy just before the Easter weekend was from Seb Cole. The lovely Seb runs Brighton’s treasure - Boho Gelato. He’s done 2 delivery runs in recent weeks and brought us sour cherry & mango gelatos. There were cones and tubs in the delivery too so my kids were overjoyed to recreate the Boho experience at home.

Easter was celebrated at home with fantastic deliveries of beautiful Saddlescombe Farm lamb from Barfields Butchers; chocolate Easter bunnies from Rainbow Organic Chocolates and the best hot cross buns on the planet from Sugardough.  We ordered some fantastic takeouts from local restaurants too - Curry Leaf CafeMoshimo’s sushi & sashimi , Lucky Beach organic burgers, Roast Host’s organic rotisserie chicken & Kambi’s legendary lamb shawarmas have all kept the family happy.

Being able to order, pick up and have deliveries from these amazing vendors has been a saving grace of this lockdown. These vendors are the life blood of our amazing city’s food scene and while we wait to start up again they need our support. Personally I can’t think of a better way to spend lock down…yum….

Stay safe and well

Love Team BFT xx

Thanks Cat - and don't forget that you can still buy Brighton Food Tour gift vouchers so you'll have something to look forward too once the lockdown is over.
