I think I had tried UnBarred beers before but the one that really caught my attention was their Summer Stout.

I generally like the darker beers – ruby ales, best bitters, porters and of course the mighty stout. However, while these drinks are delicious, they are not really suited to summer and as floral, hoppy IPAs do not appeal to me I’ll generally switch to fruity sours or cider in the warmer months. So, you can imagine my surprise and delight when I discovered the Summer Stout, a pale beer with the delicious cocoa & coffee flavours and aromas of a stout. From that moment on I became an unbridled UnBarred fan (or should that be UnBardled)!

In 2019 UnBarred opened their brewery & taproom on Elder Place, we were there on the opening weekend and will often decide to delay the commute home and pop in for a tasty pint. The taproom has a lovely laid-back vibe & there is always something new to try. Recently I’ve enjoyed their Mango Berliner Weisse and I’m looking forward to trying the Watermelon Mojito Gose!

At this point you may be wondering why I am taking you down an UnBarred inspired memory lane? Well, the brewery & taproom opened over the August Bank Holiday of 2019 and this year they can finally have a birthday party, hooray! On the 26th & 27th August UnBarred will be taking over the taps at 6 city centre pubs, collect a stamp at each pub and then head over to the taproom to collect a prize – that’s right Pints mean Prizes.

The six pubs are The Good Companions, Easy Tiger, The Quadrant, Star & Garter, William IV and The Pond. Each pub will have trail cards so you can pick up at any of the venues and once you arrive at the taproom there’ll be party games, local food, a DJ and of course more delicious beer.

You can visit the pubs in any order, and you don’t have to visit all of them but if you do fancy attempting the full trail then this is my suggested route:

🍺 Happy Birthday UnBarred – we look forward to celebrating with you. Cheers! 🍺
