Many international students make the journey to England to study - it is the mother country of the English language, there are historical places to see from the coast of Dover to the castles in the north, and many universities and English language schools where students can immerse themselves in their studies.
Brighton, a sunny seaside city on the south coast of England, draws in tens of thousands of eager students every year. A city that can feel like a small town, Brighton proudly boasts a forward-thinking, open-minded atmosphere and is known for its inclusivity. It’s also a university city: Brighton is home to two universities, the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex, with over 30,000 students. In addition to university students, Brighton has dozens of English language schools, adding to the diverse makeup of the city.
So, what makes Brighton a perfect place to come to study?
Youthful, forward-thinking city
With students making up 5% of the population, there are many attractions and facilities tailored for students, like libraries, cafes, pubs, and restaurants - many of which have great student discounts! Brighton is also often a stop for many well known and up and coming musicians. Catch an intimate performance at one of the many small clubs like Chalk or a big gig at the Brighton Centre.
Coastal location
Brighton is ‘never normal’ and never boring. Being by the coast and a quick train ride away from big cities like London, there is never a shortage of things to see and do all year round! For example, in the summer, students can hit the beach and enjoy some stand-up paddle boarding under the sun or munch some fish and chips on the beach. Just watch out for the seagulls! (It’s their favourite snack, too, and they will definitely try to help themselves to your lunch!) In the winter, students can lace up their ice skates and glide on the ice skating rink under the illuminated Royal Pavillion.
Safety
Brighton continues to be ranked among the safest cities in England, so students can feel comfortable enjoying the city - day and night (just make sure to take the same precautions as you would at home!) Also, Brighton has great public transportation with buses running day and night, so it’s easy for students to get around the city!
Cultural and art scene
Brighton has recently been voted as one of the most inspiring cities in England, a perfect place for creatives to thrive! Additionally, Brighton is home to many fantastic festivals and conventions year around. In May, students can check out the Brighton Festival, a celebration of arts, music, and literature. In August is the famous Brighton Pride, which celebrates equality, acceptance and the LGBTQ+ community. For those looking to engage in powerful conversations, there’s the TEDXBrighton event which brings together thought leaders and innovators. Finally, for the sporty student, there’s an opportunity to participate in the Brighton half marathon or marathon alongside thousands of other running enthusiasts!
