About
Make a beautiful, functional plant support using locally harvested willow, coppiced hazel and red stemmed dog wood.
Choose from a range of styles of woven plant support and make one that meets the needs of the plants you’d like to grow in your garden or large pot, or make and gift yours to the Plot 22 community garden.
Obelisks are perfect for climbing plants such as roses, beans, or sweet peas. They add height and visual interest, and their open design allows for easy access to your plants while they grow.
Shorter cylindrical supports are ideal for larger plants such as dahlias, delphiniums, or tall perennials like globe thistle. The support forms a secure, rounded framework to ensure plants grow upright without the risk of toppling over.
The best time to use plant supports is in the early stages of plant growth. By supporting plants early in the season it avoids damage later.
During this workshop we will be:
Using the shave horse and draw knife to put a point on the uprights.
Using pre-prepared frames (or the ground if space allows) to hold the uprights in place during weaving.
Learning about the different weaving materials used and when to harvest them.
Experimenting with basic weaving techniques.
You will have time to complete at least 1 support.
Tools: Secateurs and gloves will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own.
Please note: You will need fairly good hand strength for this workshop.
