Sound Affects #45: Linett Kamala, Helen Anahita Wilson, and Daniel Rachel

About

Sound Affects is a night of talks about music and subcultures, ideas around how sound affects us and how music changes the world. Hearing from writers, musicians, artists, superfans, photographers, filmmakers and everyday music lovers, we dive into personal stories, esoteric bands, fan communities, punk, pop, social change and much more. It's organised and hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker Jak Hutchcraft.
Guest speakers:
Daniel Rachel is a former musician turned award-winning and bestselling author. His previous books include Too Much Too Young: Rude Boys, Racism and the Soundtrack of a Generation and Isle of Noises: Conversations with Great British Songwriters. His new book This Ain't Rock n Roll: Pop Music, the Swastika and the Third Reich is shocking and absorbing account of pop music's complicated history with fascism and the imagery surrounding it.

Helen Anahita Wilson is a sound artist, composer and artistic researcher. She won the Oram award in 2023 and her compositional practice brings together her research in South Asian musics, especially Karnatak rhythmic theories, with experiments in sonic life writing: how to share biographical stories through sound. Her latest album is made entirely from edible, hallucinogenic, and deadly species within the Nightshade (Solanaceae) plant family. She is returning to Sound Affects with a brand new talk.

Linett Kamala is an interdisciplinary artist, DJ, producer and carnivalist born in London, U.K. to Jamaican parents. Deeply rooted in community empowerment, her socially engaged creative practice has engaged with thousands and ranges from mentoring emerging creatives to taking up space through festival culture. Linett is Founding Director of Lin Kam Art which enriches lives through festival culture via residencies, workshops, events and programmes. Her recent project is the Basstone Maypole, in which she connects her love of sound system culture, folk practises and maypole dancing. Our Jak interviewed her about it for The Guardian earlier this year.
