About

Sound Affects is a monthly of talks about music and subcultures, exploring ideas around how sound affects us and how music changes the world. It's organised and hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker Jak Hutchcraft.

This is a special event dedicated to industrial music pioneers Throbbing Gristle and proto-punk agitators COUM Transmissions. It's 50 years since Throbbing Gristle's now infamous 'PROSTITUTION' ICA show in October 1976. The prestigious Institute of Contemporary Arts took a chance on this exhibition that became both celebrated and notorious. At the time it sparked a tabloid backlash and condemnation in Parliament from Conservative MP Nicholas Fairbairn, who labelled Throbbing Gristle the "wreckers of civilisation." The ripples from this event are still being felt across art, music and performance today.

Guest speakers: Foxtrot Echo was/is, along with Genesis P-Orridge and Cosey Fanni Tutti, a principal member of the notorious Anti Art anti rock band gang COUM Transmissions which is the progenitor of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV. He originates from the Brighton area and has been leader of the COUM satellite, COUM Flakes, since 1973. He has stories to tell and things to show that have never been seen.

Matthew Levi Stevens - Author, occultural commentator, and Enochian & Hermetic magical practitioner. From 1982, via friendships with Genesis P-Orridge and the members of Coil (through whom he also met Derek Jarman and William S. Burroughs), he was an active participant in London Occulture of the 1980s and 1990s. His published works include The Magical Universe of William S. Burroughs (Mandrake of Oxford, 2014), in collaboration with C. J. Bradbury Robinson, A Way With Words (WhollyBooks, 2013), and A Moving Target: Encounters with William Burroughs (Beat Scene Press, 2012.)
