The 70th anniversary tour of The Mousetrap came to the Theatre Royal Brighton...

An anniversary of any kind is something to be celebrated and who would have thought that when it opened back in 1952 that Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap would still be wowing audiences 70 years on. It’s an iconic West End show that is still running at St Martin’s Theatre having originally been performed at the Ambassadors Theatre.

In celebration of its 70 years the show is undertaking a tour and will visit over 70 venues across the UK and last week saw its visit to the beautiful Theatre Royal Brighton. Now I am a huge theatre fan and have been lucky to see all kinds of plays and musicals, pantomimes and even opera but for some reason had never got to see The Mousetrap so it was with some excitement that I realised it was coming to Brighton and I purchased a ticket.

The Theatre Royal Brighton was the perfect setting for this Agatha Christie Whodunnit. It’s a beautiful theatre and seemed to be at full capacity on Saturday’s matinee performance. The play is set in Monkswell Manor which has recently been converted into a guesthouse and is run by Mollie and Giles Ralston. Whilst waiting for her first guests to arrive Mollie is listening to the wireless and hears a report that a woman has been murdered in London and police are looking for a man wearing a dark overcoat, light scarf and felt hat who was seen nearby. Our five guests then begin to arrive and soon find themselves snowed in. In true Christie style the characters are all very different and all appear to have a secret or two. The next afternoon a police sergeant arrives and the guests discover that there is a killer in their midst. One by one the characters reveal details on their pasts but which one is the murderer? It certainly keeps you guessing to the end (but I can’t reveal!)

The touring cast includes Todd Carty (Eastenders, Grange Hill) as Major Metcalf, Gwyneth Strong (Only Fools and Horses) as Mrs Boyle and John Altman (Eastenders) as Mr Paravicini but the whole cast were faultless and were well cast in their roles. I must also applaud the wonderful set and effects.

I am so glad that I made the effort to see the show and would certainly recommend buying a ticket for the tour or London if you can. It’s always a lovely way to spend an afternoon or evening and you can never beat live entertainment. Here’s to the 100th Anniversary of The Mousetrap.
