About
A CHRISTMAS CLASSIC, ILLUMINATED BY CANDLELIGHT
It is Christmas Eve, and the streets of Victorian London glow beneath the falling snow. Windows are lit, carollers sing on street corners, and the city readies itself for the warmth of the season. But for the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, Christmas is little more than an unwelcome interruption, a day of expense and sentiment to be endured rather than enjoyed.
That night, a ghostly warning from his former business partner, Jacob Marley, begins an extraordinary journey through time. Guided in turn by the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Be, faces drawn from his own life rather than strangers, Scrooge is drawn through the rooms of his own past: the schoolroom where he was left behind, the warehouse where he once knew joy, the home of the clerk he underpays, and the grave that waits for him if nothing changes. Along the way he is forced to confront the choices he has made, the lives he has touched, and the lonely future that awaits him if his heart remains closed.
Can one extraordinary night awaken the generosity and compassion buried deep within him, or is it already too late?
Robert Tremayne, who has adapted this version for the stage, leads the company as Ebenezer Scrooge, alongside core Dionysus performers Lauren Whedbee, taking on Mrs Cratchit among other roles, and Kelly Verstappen, who brings Jacob Marley (and death) to life, with the rest of the ensemble carried by the Muses of Dionysus. The production is directed by Associate Director Vicky Newman, who also joins the company on stage as the Narrator, and whose directing credits include some of the company's finest work to date. Staged by candlelight to a soundtrack of Victorian carols, this is a world of flickering shadows and Christmas magic.
Haunting, heartwarming, and filled with hope, A Christmas Carol by Candlelight is an unforgettable seasonal experience for audiences of all ages.
