About

Sussex has a history rich in folklore. With roots in the county’s unique culture and heritage,
there are many local stories, from faeries to ogres, but our favourite and the inspiration
behind our logo is the infamous Knucker.

Knuckers were enormous water dragons that lived in Knuckerholes; bottomless,
ever-springing chalk-fed pools scattered across the downlands. Many knuckertales have
been told throughout the years, but legend has it the last Knucker was slain many years ago,
yet the myth lives on and a little of the South Downs spring water it once guarded, now
makes its way into every one of our spirits!

The culture & heritage of Sussex is woven into the free thinkers who reside here like chalk in
our veins. Slake was born in Sussex and represents everything we are passionate about -
natural curiosity; adventure; discovery; wild inspiration.

Using these beliefs as our guide, we work hard to gather & grow the very best ingredients,
celebrating unique foraged flavours that bring a sense of adventure to the drinks world, each
one of our handcrafted bottles capturing a bit of the wild and wonderful heritage of Sussex.
With our newly refurbished distillery in Worthing now open, we’d love for you to come by to
see how we meticulously make our wild inspired spirits in Sussex by the Sea. A playground
for the gin and spirits enthusiasts and adventurers, there are distillery tours, spirit tasting
flights, cocktail masterclasses and curated grazing boards, all led by the enquiring mind of
our head dragon, distiller & forager, Dr. Thomas Martin-Wells. So come explore, play and
cheers the afternoon away
