About
We've got an absolute SCOOP for this year's May Bank Holiday Alldayer with the booking of the legendary IAN LEVINE.
There are few figures who loom as large over the Northern Soul scene as IAN LEVINE.
Indeed without Ian, would we even have a Northern Soul scene at all? He it was who first brought the Ric-Tic record label to the attention of DJs when, as a 16 year old, he first walked into The Twisted Wheel Club in Manchester. Regulat trips to the States saw him unearth more and more tracks Soul records which were never released in the UK. He continued to feed the scene with so many monster sounds until he eventually secured a DJ spot at the legendary Torch allnighters in Stoke-on-Trent.
After the demise of The Torch he could be found at the Top Rank Suite in Hanley before establishing The Highland Room at Blackpool Mecca as one of the most influential venues ever to feature on the Northern Soul scene. Together with Colin Curtis, the two steered the scene in a whole new direction as they began to embrace more contemporary sounds. Still, Ian continued to feed the scene with new sounds at The Mecca and at the Wigan Casino where he also featured behind the decks.
Levine was never far from controversey though and often found himself embroiled in 'spats' and many on the scene took umbrage at his direction and attitude.
Eventually, he spread his wings and indulged in his creative desire to write and produce his own material. 40 million record sales later, it's evident that he made an impact in that respect. Dancefloor classics like Evelyn Thomas's 7 million seller, 'Hi Inergy' and Francis Nero's, 'Footsteps, Following Me' testify to that. He virtually invented the hi-NRG genre and became resident DJ at London's influential 'Heaven' nightclub for a decade in the 1980s.
Along the way he has founded his own record labels and embarked on such epic projects as the film documentary series, 'The Crazy World of Northern Soul, which is currently showing on Amazon Prime.
Ian's last appearance in Brighton was almost seven years ago and remains imprinted on the memories of all who were present - the atmosphere that day was off the scale and we expect nothing less this time around.
