About
This winter, Brighton Museum & Art Gallery presents Gender Stories, a thought-provoking exhibition exploring how gender has been shaped, expressed and lived across cultures, history and everyday life.
Featuring works by Grayson Perry, David Hockney and Catherine Opie alongside powerful community voices, the exhibition challenges traditional ideas of gender and identity through art, objects and personal stories.
Brighton-specific highlights include a reproduction engraving of local legend Phoebe Hessel, who lived for many years dressed as a man and served in the British Army in the 18th century, a portrait of Sarah Savage, CEO of Trans Pride Brighton, items from LGBTQ+ rugby team the Brighton & Hove Sea Serpents, and photography documenting protest and celebration on the city’s streets.
