Sound Affects #39: Jamie Ross-Hulme, Tory Turk and Richard Vahrman

About

Sound Affectsis a night of talks about music and subcultures, ideas around how sound affects us and how music changes the world. Hearing from writers, musicians, artists, superfans, photographers, filmmakers and everyday music lovers, we dive into personal stories, esoteric bands, fan communities, punk, pop, social change and much more. It's organised and hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker Jak Hutchcraft. [http://jakhutchcraft.com/portfolio]

Guest speakers:
Richard Vahrman:Brighton-based jazz accordionist, writer, and creator of experimental projects that blur the lines between music, robotics, and performance. From his Robot Choir of singing heads to immersive journeys like Gatwick on the Orient Express, Richard explores how stories, sound, and design can spark wonder and reflection. You'll find him composing for unconventional instruments and exploring the human side of technology.

Tory Turk:Exhibition curator, specialising in subcultures and pop culture. In 2025 she founded HiCULTURE, a culture curation platform. Her new exhibition, Holy Pop!, opens at Somerset House on 21st May and is an exhibition celebrating the world of modern shrines, the objects and collections through which we honour heroes, celebrities, and cult icons.

Jamie Ross Hulme:Producer/director who has worked across the board in music, youth culture, marketing, advertising and entertainment for over 20 years. Jamie has made short films with the reggae and dance music vocalist Navigator, and his debut feature documentaryHyper is about the legendary jungle and drum & bass MC Stevie Hyper D.
