About
Sound Affectsis a night of talks about music and subcultures, ideas around how sound affects us and how music changes the world. Hearing from writers, musicians, artists, superfans, photographers, filmmakers and everyday music lovers, we dive into personal stories, esoteric bands, fan communities, punk, pop, social change and much more. It's organised and hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker Jak Hutchcraft. [http://jakhutchcraft.com/portfolio]
Guest speakers:
Maia Roman is a Brighton-based illustrator and designer whose practice is shaped by the influence of music, both as a source of inspiration and as a creative tool. She explores the relationship between sound and visual expression as a way to create bold, graphic imagery. She is best known for designing posters, merchandise, and promotional visuals for local musicians and independent businesses.
Baz Francis is a singer, guitarist, keyboardist and songwriter plus founding member of the bands Magic Eight Ball and Mansion Harlots. Collectively releasing 5 albums so far through Magic Cat Records (both solo and with his bands), Baz has toured and recorded extensively across the world, along the way opening for acts such as Art Alexakis (Everclear), Blind Melon and Chuck Mosley (Faith No More) as well as working with artists such as comedy legend Rik Mayall.
Helen Anahita Wilson: Sound artist, composer and artistic researcher. She won the Oram award this year and her compositional practice brings together her research in South Asian musics, especially Karnatak rhythmic theories, with experiments in sonic life writing: how to share biographical stories through sound. Helen has delivered two brilliant talks at Sound Affects in the past and she's back with something brand new for us.
