Sound Affects #42: Ruti, Mathew Clayton, Tony Fletcher

About

Sound Affectsis a night of talks about music and subcultures, ideas around how sound affects us and how music changes the world. Hearing from writers, musicians, artists, superfans, photographers, filmmakers and everyday music lovers, we dive into personal stories, esoteric bands, fan communities, punk, pop, social change and much more. It's organised and hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker Jak Hutchcraft. [http://jakhutchcraft.com/portfolio]

Guest speakers:
Ruti is a singer songwriter who draws on folk, soul, rock and gospel in their spellbinding music. In 2018, they won the seventh series of The Voice UK in 2018 under the mentorship of Sir Tom Jones. They're coming to Sound Affects to talk about an artist who has shaped them.

Tony Fletcher is a music journalist and his new book is 'Pow! When UK Punk Went Pop (1980-1984). In it he explores this explosive time in British rock, as the disruptive energy of bands like the Clash and Sex Pistols gave way to more sophisticated and chart-friendly genres and bands. Fletcher was on the front lines, running a record label with the Jams Paul Weller, attending all the important concerts and meeting the top acts, many of whom became MTV regulars: Madness, Dexys Midnight Runners, Wham!, Echo & the Bunnymen, Killing Joke, Adam and the Ants, the Smiths and more. This is a coming-of-age story, the tale of a nave young man in a cultural whirlwind who learns some hard
lessons about business, journalism, love and sex all the while trying to get his own band a record deal.

Mathew Clayton is the originator of the Kling Klang/Ding Dong dichotomy. A universal theory that divides the world into two contrasting musical forces; one for good and one for evil. He expounded this philosophy in"I was a teenage bellringer"(Rough Trade Editions) an essay that for the first time connected; the typographic work of Eric Gill with the acid house nightclub Shoom, pond dweller Henry Thoreau with lost kids Tv presenter Timmy Mallet and Elton's better half Kiki Dee with King of France Napolean Bonaparte.
