About
What can plants teach us about place, memory and belonging?
In his new book 'The Possibility of Tenderness', T. S. Eliot Prize and Forward Prize winner Jason Allen-Paisant explores the landscapes of his childhood in rural Jamaica and his adult life in Britain. Through fever grass, leaf of life, search mi heart, and other healing plants, he uncovers a story of migration and belonging—one that questions inherited ideas of ownership and identity, and reimagines our connection to the land.
Jason is joined by Monique Roffey, author of the Costa Prize-winning 'The Mermaid of Black Conch', whose work vividly conjures the vibrant landscapes of the Caribbean, where the natural world is both beautiful and fragile. Her work explores the complexities of identity and ecological loss, urging a deeper connection with the world around us and the urgent need to protect it.
Together they will reflect on how land, language and the natural world remain deeply entangled with empire – and how gardens and green spaces might hold space for tenderness, resistance and repair.
This event will be chaired by Claire Ratinon.
