About

Immerse yourself in the stories, art and legacy of Charleston in this ten-week art history course led by Dr Alistair Grant. Through engaging discussions with curators, iconic objects and guided private tours you'll uncover the history of the creative spirit of the Bloomsbury group.

Over 10 weeks you will:

Study Charleston's landscape and history: Explore how the South Downs and Charleston's architecture inspired the Bloomsbury Group, including their historical context during World War I.

Understand the Bloomsbury Group dynamics: Examine Vanessa Bell's 'The Memoir Club' and delve into the relationships and roles of key members through paintings and photographs.

Discover European art influences: Analyse 'Flowers' by Roderic O'Conor to understand the introduction of Parisian modernism and the Pont-Aven movement to Britain

Explore decorative arts and furniture: Learn about Omega Workshops' designs, including Fry's chairs, Bell's fabrics, and Grant's screens, reflecting Bloomsbury's artistic ethos.

Analyse Charleston's ceramics: Trace the evolution of British studio pottery through Grant's and Quentin Bell's ceramic designs.

Investigate Bloomsbury sculpture: Study works like Stephen Tomlin's busts, connecting Bloomsbury's literary and artistic narratives to broader cultural contexts.

Trace Keynes' art legacy: Follow Maynard Keynes' influential art acquisitions, linking Charleston to European masters like Manet and Cézanne.

Examine Queer histories: Investigate Duncan Grant's portraits and private homoerotic drawings, shedding light on hidden LGBTQ+ narratives.

Decode Bloomsbury's personal lives: Use objects and diaries to uncover stories of love, betrayal, and creativity, including "The Great Row."

Celebrate Angelica Garnett's contribution: Reflect on her memoirs, her restoration work at Charleston, and her role in preserving Bloomsbury's legacy.

This 10-week course takes place in the Hay Barn and includes complimentary tea and coffee throughout. Participants will enjoy guided visits and tours of Charleston house and gardens, gain close access to unique artefacts, and engage in insightful conversations with curators and conservators.
