How to Collect Spoken Stories: A practical workshop with Aisha Kent

About

Queer Heritage South is organising a series of sessions for the QTIBPoC community based in and around Brighton & Hove, to connect with each other and think about presence in the area, histories, stories and networks.

This session will be facilitated by Asha Kent, who will be leading a workshop and training in oral history and how to effectively collect spoken stories. Learn how to encourage insightful dialogue, with the art of asking questions and sparking conversation.

You'll learn the key skills and techniques involved in the morning and then after lunch you'll have the opportunity to experiment and interview each other if you would like to.

This event is exclusively for QTIBPoC (Queer/Trans/Intersex Black people/People of Colour). Please only book a ticket if you identify as both Queer (anywhere on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum) and a Person of Colour/part of the Global Majority.

Asha Kent is a Collaborative Theatre Maker and Workshop Facilitator. "As a Queer Person of Colour, I'm passionate about work that champions the voices of those at risk of marginalisation." Having delivered workshops on a range of subjects, including communication skills, oral history and safeguarding with such partners as the NHS.

Access
We try and make sure there are as few barriers to people joining our events as possible. We can pay for participants to take taxis to/from events for reasons such as disability, health conditions, wellbeing and personal safety if it means they can come along and would not otherwise be able to. Please be aware that we have a limited budget for this so only request this if you need it. We would ask you to book and pay for your taxi/s and keep the receipt/s. We can then reimburse you if you fill in a short form which we will send to those who have requested taxi expenses to be covered.

We are using a step free venue. If you have any access requirements, please let us know in advance by emailing laura@marlboroughproductions.org.uk

Buddy System
We will have a buddy system to help if you are feeling nervous about coming along and meeting new people. You can book an 'I'd love to be linked with a buddy' 'ticket' in addition to your regular ticket. If you feel more comfortable in the group and able to offer yourself as a buddy you can book an 'I can be a buddy...' 'ticket' in addition to your regular ticket. Then we will e-introduce you so that you can connect beforehand if you wish to.
