Jmw Turner And Brighton:'the Fascination Of Land And Sea'

About

JMW Turner was an inveterate traveller, both in Britain and on the Continent. But his journeys were all business trips, made to gather material for engravings, watercolours or oil paintings.

In this talk Dr Matthew Morgan will look at the aspects of Brighton that fascinated Turner: modern engineering in the Chain Pier, fashionable society in the bathing machines and the Pavilion, shipping struggling against the power of the sea and the effects of sunlight through the clouds and over the water.

Matthew is a freelance art historian, educator and museum professional. He has been the Museum Director of Turners House. He is an Associate Lecturer at Birkbeck, University of London. He has worked at the Royal Collection, the National Gallery, the Wallace Collection and the V&A. He has contributed to TV documentaries, podcasts, and radio shows. He can be found on YouTube.

Doors open 6pm, talk starts at 6.30pm. Please note, this presentation takes place in our front drawing room at 1st floor level, for accessibility, see: https://rth.org.uk/accessibility-guide
