Committed to offering quality music from South Asia, The Mehfil Space @mehfilspace [http://@mehfilspace] is collaborating with zer0classikal to bring you two performers who will delight and inspire you. Peter will play long form classical raag music on the sitar, accompanied by Junaid Ali, a much sought after tabla performer, during this night of 'Mehfil - e - Hop Yard' .The concept of "Mehfil" is defined as "a gathering where music or poetry is performed for a small audience in an intimate setting."
Dr Pete Yelding is a sitarist and cellist. He is the 7th documented generation of a family of travelling performers of Romani origin. His sitar training began when he encountered Hindustani music in his first year of music college and felt a deep affinity with the tradition. After over a decade of preparatory study in the UK, he travelled to Kolkata, where he became a student of sarod master, Ustad Irfan Muhammad Khan the last hereditary proprietor of the oldest lineage of sarod and sitar players, the Lucknow-Shahjahanpur Gharana.
Pete is now one of only a handful of musicians dedicated to propagating the expansive repertoire and unique style of the Lucknow-Shahjahanpur Gharana. He establishes in his performances a raw, but tender evocation of whichever raga he is presenting. He seeks to rehabilitate for modern audiences the deeply stirring, heavier sound of past sitar and sarod luminaries.
Over his professional career Pete has performed and collaborated with artists such as Ustad Shahbaz Hussain, Kuljit Bhamra, Talvin Singh, Sura Susso, Jonathan Mayer; and organisations such as the Royal Shakespeare Company, Bristol Old Vic, SAMA Arts, Cape Farewell, Birmingham REP, Oxford University & Zero Classikal.
Junaid Ali on tabla, is the student of Ustad Shahbaz Hussain and son of prominent ghazal singer Zeeshan Ali khansaab, born and raised in the East of London. Junaid has been under the tutelage of the Punjab and Delhi Gharana. He has had the opportunity and good fortune of performing with many great artists around the world; namely Ustad Ghulam Ali, Ustad Shafqat Ali Khan, Hans Raj Hans, Tauseef Akhtar khansaab to name a few. Junaid has broadened his horizons by recording albums with Western fusion music, particularly with 9 time Grammy Award winner: Skrillex. He has been invited to perform at both the Lahore + Karachi All Pakistan Music Conferences, he has had the privilege of performing under the Darbar Festival several times and has had the opportunity of performing in phenomenal venues such as Wembley Stadium, Birmingham Symphony Hall, the V&A, Trafalgar Square, and more. Junaid is also a teacher of psychology and teaches tabla to the next generation and aims to do so for the foreseeable future.
Every concert becomes a collaborative dialogue, with all musicians collectively shaping the musical journey.
