Melissa Graham: The Poetry of Use

About

The Poetry of Use celebrates the quiet beauty of objects made to be held, shared, and lived with.

The surfaces of these pots carry their own gentle language. Through careful, considered choices, the handmade glazes settle into a distinctive, soft colour palette — hues that feel calm, natural, and quietly familiar. Ash glazes, rich with the minerals carried in the wood ash itself, bring subtle unpredictability and depth, creating surfaces that feel alive to light and use.

These functional pots — mugs, bowls, jars, vessels for the table and the home — are anchors of daily ritual. They accompany the small, grounding moments that shape a day: the first cup of tea, the preparing of food, the gathering of people around a meal. Though made for use, they hold a sculptural presence, inviting the eye to linger on curve, weight, and surface.

This exhibition welcomes visitors into a space of warmth and comfort, where the handmade feels both familiar and quietly resonant. These pots are companions in the gentle rituals that make a life feel rooted and whole.

About the Artist

Melissa is a Worthing-based potter, working from a small studio in her garden where she can see the sky, hear birdsong, and feel connected to the natural world as she works. She makes functional pots because she believes they speak to something fundamental about being human: we are the only species that requires so many crafted objects simply to prepare and share food.

Clay is endlessly responsive — every touch, mood, and moment is recorded in the material — and she is drawn to its paradoxical nature: humble and common, yet shaped by millions of years of geology.

Ceramics is a craft of infinite depth, and its lifelong learning suits her nature perfectly. Making requires deep focus, and on good days the studio becomes a place of flow, stillness, and joy.
