About

Queerness and religion are often imagined to be fundamentally opposed, but in Queer Religion, Frances Marshall explores the ways they intersect.

Queer Religion is a photographic project exploring the lives and experiences of openly queer religious leaders and practitioners across the monotheistic faiths. As a queer atheist, Frances set out to photograph people finding ways to live openly within religious institutions that have historically promoted queerphobia, while challenging the assumption that queerness and religious faith are necessarily incompatible.

The resulting photographs and testimonies bring together queerness and religion around ideas of resistance, renewal, radical equality, devotion and transformation.

The project has travelled internationally over the past three years and is now being published as Queer Religion Volume 1, a limited-edition hardback book.

For this Exploding Appendix, Frances will join us to talk about the project, the people she has photographed, and the questions that emerged through making it: about gender and sexuality, faith, resistance and belonging, and the possibility that queerness might not simply be opposed to religion at all and might have something to teach it.
