Sight Support Worthing: The World as we See It

About

An exhibition of work by individuals experiencing sight loss who attend the Sight Support Worthing Art Group and our friends from Inclusive Arts.

This the first public showing of work by members of both Sight Support Worthing and Inclusive Arts Mixed Media class. Made possible by a grant from Worthing CIL fund.

People who are losing their sight have to learn to see and navigate the world in a different way, both in their everyday lives and when trying something new.

For some, picking up a pencil or paint brush for the first time since school can be quite daunting. Many of our art group have discovered new talents and skills in a diverse range of art & craft with a realisation that anything is possible.

The Art Group was established as an experiment during Lockdown. With five SSW members led by Fiona McVey we muddled through the technical problems of Zoom and setting up art studios at our kitchen tables. After a year online we moved into the SSW headquarters in Rowlands Road and have expanded slowly to our current class of 14 participants with differing sight impairments.

Fiona McVey and Jude Bitton started Inclusive Arts at Heene Gallery in 2010 with a mission statement of "Arts for All", they have worked with many local artists and in partnership with organisations such as SSW.

The Mixed Media Class is open to anyone who enjoys experimenting without pressure, providing a positive environment where people can build their confidence and self- esteem, promoting art for health by being creative.

We invite members of the public to join us at this celebration of the possible, put on a pair of simulation spectacles a for a brief moment and see the world as we see it…
