Sir Vince Cable Eclipsing the West: China, India and the Forging of a New World

About

Has the West already lost its edge? Can it adapt to the rise of Asia? And what does this mean for Britains future?

In this urgent and illuminating talk, Sir Vince Cable draws on his widely praised new book Eclipsing the West to chart the greatest geopolitical transformation of our age. Across the 21st century, the worlds centre of gravity is shifting eastward: China is redefining industrial and technological power; India is emerging as the worlds fastest-growing democracy; and Western nations are struggling to maintain influence in a world they no longer dominate.

Cable traces the roots of this changefrom globalisation and de-industrialisation to demographic trends, climate policy and AIand asks whether the Wests institutions, from NATO to the IMF, can adapt before its too late. He argues that this is not simply a tale of decline but one of renewal and opportunity: a test of whether Western societies can rediscover innovation, openness and moral confidence in an Asian century.

With characteristic clarity and independence of mind, Cable offers a masterclass in how economics, politics and power intersect on the global stageand what Britain must do to stay relevant in a rapidly rebalanced world.

Sir Vince Cable is a British politician, economist and writer. Former Leader of the Liberal Democrats and Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, he served as MP for Twickenham for two decades and was Chief Economist at Shell. His previous books include Money and Power, The Storm and The Chinese Conundrum.
