Steve Fricker ‘States of Being’ Exhibition at KMA Gallery

About

Kellie Miller Arts is thrilled to present ‘States of Being’, a solo exhibition of the surreal narrative paintings of Steve Fricker, a mediation on human existence and the varying guises under which we each appear.

A thoughtful observer of the human condition, Steve’s layered paintings present a mirror to ourselves, capturing our need for ritual, habit and myth in order to make sense of our journey through the vast universe. Particularly fascinated by narratives developed in childhood, his paintings are composed of many seemingly disparate objects among people, often referencing our playful beginnings that erode as we grow.

Keen to reignite this youthful imagination, Steve lays bare the artifice we surround ourselves with as a coping mechanism to the infinite possibilities presented by life. People interact with these found objects in unintended ways, questioning the value and meaning of these objects in the stories of our lives. Each painting presents an alternative to how we can understand ourselves, reopening our minds to the limitless.

The ‘States of Being’ exhibition takes place in our first floor gallery. A selection of artwork by other KMA artists is on view in our ground floor gallery, including paintings and etchings by Carolyn Bew, paintings by Ashley Hanson, ceramics by Patricia Shone, and sculptures by Helen Nottage.
