UnSeen

About

Five West Sussex women artists. Five distinct mediums. A long history of exhibiting together.

So, what makes this year different?

Under the working title 'UnSeen', we're stepping into new, experimental territory—bringing long-dormant ideas to the surface. Through distinct mediums and brief personal reflections, each artist offers a unique glimpse into what the 'UnSeen' means to them.

Anna Cates
Making Light Work.

Anna Cates is embracing her Scandinavian heritage in this exhibition and is looking for simpler expressions for her turned wooden lighting. She is aiming for a stripped back aesthetic with crisp lines and smooth curves in her designs. Her signature flawless finish invites you to run your hands along her pieces. Being both sculptural and functional she is hoping these works will not go unseen.

Jane Denman
Moving from light into shade, Jane focuses on the quiet spaces nestled within urban environments. Through her large-scale paintings, she invites viewers to discover hidden layers of stillness—offering a serene sanctuary to pause and reset away from the noise of everyday life. Her work creates an immersive visual environment for personal reflection and calm

Lorraine Gibby
Lorraine continues with the idea that introducing unexpected materials and embellishments to the edges and joins of her 3D pieces invites the viewer to engage with how an object is created. Using threads, stitching and knotting the metal parts together, has proved challenging, and effective, both practically and aesthetically. Taking the time to explore the unseen facilitates an understanding of others, of objects and of our surroundings.

Fleur Grenier RCA
Nature's unseen stories are at the heart of my work. Through the Home and Hidden Botanicals series, I explore the hidden relationships between plants, insects and the places they inhabit. Using pewter in ways unique to the material, I preserve fleeting moments of nature, revealing the quiet processes of growth, belonging and connection that so often go unnoticed.

Jessica Jordan
My ceramic practice explores landscape, memory and place through vessels, wall pieces and sculpture. Using slips and underglazes, I paint from memory, inspired by everyday landscapes, archaeological finds and historical sites. Each piece connects personal memories with the stories held within the land.
