As part of VisitEngland's My Coast has the Most campaign we have compiled a list of Brighton's most weird and wonderful facts, celebrating what we do best!
Most hours of sunshine
Brighton is often voted one of sunniest cities in the UK, regularly racking up the most hours of sunny weather, a recent survey quoted Brighton as having a whopping 9.9 hours of sunshine on average per day, we think it is what helps us be such a chilled and friendly city.
Most independent shops
Brighton & Hove consistently tops the charts of most independent shops per capita in the UK. Brighton boasts approximately 24 independent retailers per 100,000 residents. We are fiercely proud of our Lanes and North Laine area, which champion the independent ethos.
Most vegan & vegetarian restaurants outside of London
From small stalls serving vegan treats at the Open Market, to award- winning vegetarian restaurants such as terre a terre, Brighton & Hove offers a huge variety of options to those who prefer a plant-based diet.
Most Jedis
Looking for the highest concentration of Jedi knights in the UK? We are your tribe! The 2011 census cemented Brighton as a stronghold for the force, and popular boutique Hotel Pelirocco, even has a Star Wars themed room you can stay in!
Most pebbles on the beach
Ok, so we’re not sure if this one is official, but with estimates suggesting there are 100 billion pebbles on Brighton beach, we must be strong contenders!
Most walkable city
Brighton was voted 3rd most walkable city in the world and number 1 in the UK by Time Out. Not only is our city centre easy to navigate on foot, thanks to the King Charles III Coastal Path, it is now possible to walk even further around our beautiful coastline.
One of the most visited piers
Brighton Palace Pier is one of the UK's most iconic seaside attractions, welcoming over 3 million visitors a year. This iconic Grade II* listed structure shares its deep history with Brighton's development as a seaside resort which has evolved alongside the city to become what it is today.
Most Royal palaces (not owned by the crown)
The people of Brighton purchased the Royal Pavilion in 1850 for the princely sum of £53,000, making the Royal Pavilion the only Royal Palace not owned by the crown. Today you can visit and experience a fantasy palace fit for a king, whilst you bask in Regency splendour, inside and out.
Most wonderful coastal sunsets
There is something very special about watching the sun go down over the sea after a day of adventure, whether it is in winter when the starlings visit, or in summer with an ice cream, this is Brighton at it’s best.
Most populated Biosphere
As the UK’s only urban Biosphere, the Living Coast stretches from Worthing to Seaford and north over the South Downs National Park to Wivelsfield and Newick in the Low Weald. Did you know, Brighton is one of only seven Biospheres in the UK?
Most amazing 450ft panoramic seafront views
At 450ft, Brighton i360 is Europe’s tallest moving platform, offering breathtaking views across our beautiful coastal city. The perfect spot for a sundowner!
Most independent coffee shops in the UK
A recent study by Capital on Tap found that Brighton came out top for having the highest number of independent coffee shops, something we are immensely proud of. Cafe culture has long been part of the fabric of the city, and independent cafes especially are the lifeblood of the city.
Most time having an official naturist beach
Our free-spirited city also offers a designated beach area where you can be free of clothes too. Brighton made a little bit of seaside history on 1 April 1980 when it opened its naturist beach - the first public naturist beach in the UK.
The world’s most long-running electric railway
Volk’s Electric Railway reopened this year for its 143rd year, having been transporting passengers since 1883. This is the perfect activity for kids and adults alike, hop on and watch the seafront go by, on your way to and from Brighton Marina.
Most aquatic displays at SEA LIFE Brighton
Step into an aquatic world, with heaps of history. Right on Brighton’s seafront, SEA LIFE Brighton has been caring for a wide range of sea creatures since 1872 and is the perfect coastal attraction.
Most surprising place for a Sauna
Beach Box Sauna is an all-year-round, wood-fired public sauna spa, based right on the beach, step inside their converted horse boxes, enjoy a range of sauna experiences and don't forget to use the sea as your plunge pool.
Most Open Water Swimming Centres on the beach
The Sea Lanes is a 50m, 6 lane heated outdoor swimming pool has been making a splash since it opened on Brighton seafront. This is the perfect stepping stone to sea swimming and is comfortably warm year-round.
Most Fringe events in England
Brighton Fringe is the largest annual arts festival in England and one of the largest fringe festivals in the world. Visit in May and enjoy hundreds of Fringe events, each year their programme gets more varied and eccentric.
Most popular for a night out
Research recently compiled by The Great British Coastal Report Index showed Brighton tops other coastal destinations as it boasts an impressive 227 pubs within a 5-mile radius, alongside a whopping 966 restaurants, and 122 bars and clubs, all you need to have an amazing night out is right here.
