An Evening with Iain Matthews, co-founder of Fairport Convention

About

Folk pioneer Iain Matthews is back touring the UK by popular demand and, alongside his legendary Plainsong colleague, Andy Roberts, will be playing songs from his new release, plus his vast back catalogue, including his rendition of 'Woodstock' which was a UK No 1 hit single for him in 1970.

Born in Barton-upon-Humber, Lincolnshire, Iain is an English musician and singer-songwriter. He was an original member of the British folk rock band Fairport Convention from 1967 to 1969 before leaving to form his own band, Matthews Southern Comfort, which had a UK number one in 1970 with their cover of Joni Mitchell's 'Woodstock' and, later, Plainsong. In 1979, his recording of Terence Boylan's Shake It reached No. 13 on the US charts. He was also a member of the bands Hi-Fi, No Grey Faith, and More Than a Song.

Singer, songwriter, and lead guitarist Andy Roberts had his first taste of fame as a member of the legendary poetry and music collectives, The Scaffold and Liverpool Scene, before establishing himself as a solo artist, songwriter and highly in-demand session guitarist and forming Plainsong with Iain. Post Plainsong, Andy toured as a guitarist on the Pink Floyd The Wall Tour, backed Billy Connelly, written TV and film scores, and even provided music and voice for Spitting Image!

Expect fantastic harmonies, scintillating guitar playing, and stories galore.

St Mary's has ramped access and an accessible toilet. Free companion tickets are available.

Refreshments will be served before the event and during the interval.
