Causeway Chamber Orchestra - A Viennese Akademie

About

Join the Causeway Chamber Orchestra as we journey to the vibrant musical world of late eighteenth-century Vienna, where composers, virtuoso performers, and eager audiences gathered for the city's celebrated musikalische Akademienpublic concerts that showcased the finest new orchestral music of the age. Led by the orchestra's founder Luca J. Imperiale and joined by some of today's finest young musicians, the CCO invites you to experience an evening of Classical brilliance, wit, and imagination.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 2 in E-flat major, K.417, remains one of the most beloved works ever written for the instrument. Composed for his friend, the celebrated horn player Joseph Leutgeb, the concerto is full of warmth, humour, and lyrical charm, while demanding exceptional artistry from the soloist. Its joyful character and effortless elegance continue to delight audiences more than two centuries after its premiere.

Antonio Rosetti was among the most admired symphonists of his generation, earning widespread acclaim across Europe for his elegant and inventive orchestral writing. His Symphony in A major (A12) is a work of sparkling vitality, combining graceful melodies, dramatic contrasts, and richly coloured orchestration that exemplify the refinement of the Classical style.

The concert concludes with one of the most imaginative orchestral works of the Classical period: Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf's Symphony in F major from his celebrated cycle inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses. Depicting the myth of Philemon and Baucis, the symphony combines vivid musical storytelling with expressive lyricism and dramatic invention, demonstrating why Dittersdorf was regarded alongside Haydn and Mozart as one of the leading composers of his day.

A Viennese Akademie promises an evening of elegance, virtuosity, and musical discovery, celebrating the rich orchestral tradition of eighteenth-century Vienna and the remarkable composers whose music captivated audiences in the city's flourishing public concerts.
