About
A creative workshop exploring life after hysterectomy
This creative workshop brings together craft and conversation to open up a subject that is rarely discussed: hysterectomy. While the procedure is relatively common, its impact—physical, emotional, and social—often remains hidden. For some, hysterectomy is life-changing in the best way, ending years of pain and unresolved gynaecological problems. For others, it brings an early menopause, with experiences ranging from the well-supported to deeply isolating.
Led by Dr Jill Kirby and Dr Ali Ramsey, both humanities researchers in women’s health and menopause, this event uses craft as a tool to share stories, challenge myths, and create a safe, supportive space for dialogue. Jill’s historical research has uncovered powerful testimonies from women whose voices deserve to be heard, while Ali’s work has explored creative methods for sharing those voices and community engagement. Together, they aim to normalise experiences of hysterectomy and menopause and foster connection.
Join us to make, share, and reflect—whether you’ve had a hysterectomy or are close to someone who has. This workshop is part of a growing project to explore the lived experience of hysterectomy in 20th and 21st century Britain.
