Join us for the launch event of the Sussex Heritage Trust Awards at the award-winning Newhaven Fort, celebrating another year of outstanding heritage projects across Sussex.Guests will enjoy sparkling wine, coffee and cake on arrival, followed by talks from the Chair of the Sussex Heritage Trust and headline sponsors Thakeham, including the launch of the new Apprentice of the Year Award. Youll also hear from the project team and Newhaven Fort representatives about the remarkable restoration that secured the Fort an SHT Award last year, with guided tours offering behind-the-scenes insight.
Completed in 1871, Newhaven Fort is a Scheduled Ancient Monument of national importance. A 7.5m Towns Fundsupported, conservation-led project has secured its future while revitalising it as a community asset. Works focused on improving accessibility, conserving historic fabric and enhancing the visitor experience, including repairs to WWII gun emplacements, casemate restorations to tackle water ingress, masonry and repointing works, new exhibitions and interpretation, upgraded visitor facilities, whole-site services upgrades, and the creation of a sensitively designed adventure playgroundbroadening the Forts appeal while respecting its military heritage.
