The Kelleth Piano Trio presents a thought-provoking programme of music by Joseph Haydn, Sally Beamish, and Dmitri Shostakovich.
Sally Beamish's "Trance" takes the melancholic slow movement of Haydn F# minor piano trio Hob XV No. 26 as its inspiration as the composer evokes her mother's gradual disappearance into dementia. Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 is dedicated to the memory of his dearest friend but possibly also inspired by accounts of the horrors of Nazi concentration camps. At times grotesque and angry, at times starkly beautiful, it is an intense and haunting work.
