About
Drag King, Divorcee and Drama Queen, Nelly Power was a force to be reckoned with. Arguably the first true drag king, she lived a financially independent and scandalous life that was way more dramatic offstage than on.
A major star of the Victorian era Nelly lost everything when the young Marie Lloyd stole her most famous song. This one woman play is a true tale of betrayal, discrimination, sexual exploitation, domestic violence and press intrusion - all viewed through the subversive lens of the Victorian Music Hall. They dont seem such good old days now, do they?
Marie Lloyd Stole My Life is an insight into the not so glamorous world of showbusiness. The Music Hall was the Victorian equivalent of todays Britains Got Talent. Overnight stardom, fame and fortune was offset by unwanted attention from the press and the public, and fortunes and reputations were lost just as quickly as they were gained. Has anything changed in 150 years? Probably only the names.
Using popular songs of the period this is the story of how Marie Lloyd, the Queen of the Music Hall came to fame, as seen from Nellys perspective. Its a true Victorian Melodrama - a bit Ripper Street and a bit Eastenders.
