The Government Inspector by Nikolai Gogol, in an adaptation by David Harrower

About

The news that a government inspector is due to arrive in a small Russian town sends its bureaucrats into a panicked frenzy. A simple case of mistaken identity exposes the hypocrisy and corruption at the heart of the town in this biting moral satire. Chaos, mayhem and hilarious consequences ensue leading to a tangled web of lies, lust and unrequited love.

First published almost 200 years ago, this fresh and very funny adaptation reminds us that "plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose" - the more things change, the more they remain the same. As our own world seems caught up in ever expanding, dizzying heights of corruption, this production is a timely reminder that sometimes, the best and only thing we can do is to laugh long and loud at our morally bankrupt leaders.
