Woyzeck By Georg Buchner

About

"A sin so fat and thick it stinks so much you could smoke the angels out of Heaven with it"
This new adaptation embraces the darkness of Woyzeck's violent, erotic, abusive and inhumane world.

Georg Bchner's play tells the story of the poor soldier, Woyzeck, subject of a medical experiment and tormented by hallucinations from a diet of peas; of his wife, Marie, by whom he's fathered a child; of Marie's overpowering desire for a brute of a man - the Drum Major and, finally, of the murderous outcome of this oppressive brew. The play is widely considered to mark the beginning of modern drama exploring themes of madness, poverty and societal oppression.

Georg Bchner died in 1837 before completing the play. It was found as a bundle of 20 or so scenes. There was no obvious particular order to them and his handwriting was poor. There were also many versions deemed as drafts. Subsequently, Bchner's unfinished text has given life to many different versions.

"An outstanding new version and production - Dr Tristan Marshall PHD (University Cambridge, Shakespeare's Globe) awarded the production Best Actor, Best Play, Best Presentation and Adjudicator's Choice Award at Henley Drama Festival.
